Come spend two days working with the earth—literally.
Earthen Artistry is a hands-on, residential workshop where you’ll explore natural materials like clay, sand, fibers and plant-based pigments to create textured, layered surfaces.
At the heart of this experience is Sgraffito—a technique of carving into pigmented plaster to reveal hidden layers beneath. It’s tactile, meditative, and deeply satisfying.
Whether you’re an artist or simply curious, this space is open to all learners—no prior experience needed. Just a willingness to get your hands dirty and slow down.
👩🎨 About the Artist
Paulina María Rico is a Mexican-American artist whose work is rooted in natural materials and intuitive making.
Working with clay, sand, fibers, and pigments, she creates murals, sculptures, and installations that bridge art, ecology, and design. Her practice is shaped through hands-on collaboration with artisans across the world—bringing both skill and sensitivity into every process.

Day 1 — Grounding & Preparation
- Introduction to materials and techniques
- Demo: High-relief sculpting
- Pigment preparation and testing
- Plaster mixing + application
- Collective design ideation
Day 2 — Making & Carving
- Sculpting and surface building
- Applying layered pigmented plasters
- Sgraffito technique (carving into layers)
- Artwork development and finishing
