What to Expect?

In this four-day retreat, we will explore the evolution of dance, gaining an understanding of how it has developed into the diverse forms we see today. Our journey will involve discovering our own unique perspectives on dance and movement while learning essential principles and techniques to enhance our improvisation skills as movers and dancers. We will delve into the roots of Contact Improvisation, examining different types of connections and how to identify and cultivate them. Additionally, we will develop our ability to communicate through our bodies and master the art of making lifts efficient and playful. This retreat promises to be a comprehensive exploration of modern dance, enriching our understanding and practice of movement.

ABOUT MODERN DANCE & CONTACT IMPROVISATION

With a focus on Modern Dance and Contact Improvisation, this retreat combines theoretical understanding with practical application. Participants will learn essential techniques, develop deeper body awareness, and improve their improvisational skills. ABOUT FACILITATORS

GURU SURAJ

Guru Suraj is an Indian artist with a background in visual and movement arts, dedicated to facilitating, researching, organizing, and performing Contact Improvisation at the cross-section with different art forms.

Guru has a Bachelor’s degree in Painting and a Master’s degree in Philosophy of Yoga. Together with other first Indian teachers of Contact Improvisation, he founded Contact Improv India (CII) and InContact - organizations that focus on teaching and performing CI throughout India. In his teachings he bridges both the radical and the traditional. He investigates how to strengthen creativity, discipline curiosity, and learn by sharing different modes of communication.

ADRIANNA MISHALSKA

Contact Improvisation dancer, facilitator, performer, and independent artist from Poland with a background in Contact Improvisation, somatics, and various improvisation methods studied across the globe. Adrianna graduated with a Dance and Culture degree from University of Surrey, UK and is a certified DanceAbility teacher. Currently Adrianna is collaborating with Contact Improv India and InContact - organizations that foster the development of Contact Improvisation scene in India through movement arts residencies, workshops, and performances. Adrianna is interested in embracing artistic practices from different cultures into a creative process, and looking at the trans-disciplinary potential when working with text, image, sound, and movement.

ABHISHEK GOYAL

Abhishek Goyal, born in Bathinda and based in Ludhiana, Punjab, is a passionate dance educator and multifaceted artist. At 28 years old, Abhishek has been deeply immersed in the world of dance since he was 13, starting his journey in local dance studios. Despite an initial foray into Computer Engineering, Abhishek’s true calling in the arts led him to drop out after three years. During his time in engineering, he excelled in dance and music, winning numerous inter-university competitions and forming a soft rock band as the lead vocalist. His commitment to dance propelled him to train with renowned Indian choreographer Terence Lewis and complete a teacher’s training program at Tianzhu Dance Theater in Mumbai. Additionally, he holds a 300-hour yoga teacher certification and was awarded a full scholarship for the Goa Contact Festival in 2019. His diverse training encompasses Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Contact Improvisation, Bollywood, and Bhangra, though he primarily teaches the former styles. Abhishek has extensive experience in teaching dance and yoga across various platforms, including retreats, workshops, festivals, and studios. He is also a skilled organizer, adept at managing events and creating enriching learning environments for participants. Beyond dance, Abhishek is a skilled video editor, songwriter, and musician. His professional experience includes roles in customer support and management, which supported his artistic pursuits. Currently, he is also a business distributor. Abhishek’s retreats in Dharamkot, Himachal Pradesh, focus on Contact Improvisation, Modern Day Contemporary, Floor work, and Somatic practices. His mission is to educate participants about the profound connection between dance and movement, fostering an enriching and transformative experience.

SANKALP SHARMA (Founder – Vinyasa Dance Ashram)

Sankalp Sharma founder of Vinyasa The Dance Ashram is a Dancer and Choreographer. His training includes Terence Lewis Company India, Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance (NYC, U.S.A), Peridance Capezio Center(NYC, U.S.A). He is trained in Contemporary, Modern (Graham Technique , Horton technique, Simonson) and Ballet.  He is a diploma holder in Contemporary dance from Terence Lewis dance company where he started his first professional dance training and Professional dance Career. He moved to NYC in 2015 for his further training in Martha Graham School. After studying Graham technique for a year he took a transfer to Peridance Capezio center to explore different ways of movement and contemporary Dance.  In NYC he was performing and choreographing dance shows with different companies like Junoon Performing Arts, Moksha Arts, AATMA etc. and Performed for different choreographers like Yuka Kawazu (ballet), Mathew James (Contemporary), Rachel M. Hettinger, Vivake Khamsingsavath, etc. He is been teaching in India since 2017 in different states and companies like Danceworx Gurgaon, Nritya Shakti (Mumbai), LFRD (Bangalore), Flux (Bangalore), Redanse.co (Gurgaon), Danceinc (Ahmedabad), Jungle Dance Theatre (Goa), etc. He also organised Scholership Auditions in 2020 in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore to Study in Peridance Capezio Center (NYC)
